Vessels Requiring Titling
All motorboats operating on West Virginia waters are required to be titled. Historical Context: Effective July 1, 1989, West Virginia transitioned to a mandatory titling structure for motorized craft. Prior to this date, motorboats were only subject to state registration requirements.
Transaction Documentation Requirements
Standard title processing mandates submission of the following: • A Certificate of Origin, properly assigned by the licensed dealer. • Form MB-6 (Official Application for Boat Title). • The itemized Dealer’s Invoice or the completed Dealer Certification section on the Form MB-6.
Alternative Titling Scenarios
Secondary transfer methods or complex title chains may additionally require: • Form DMV-1-B (Hull Identification Certification), which must be physically completed and signed by a law enforcement officer. • Evidence that the registration matches the seller’s name (or that the DMV can internally verify historical ownership). • A valid, notarized Bill of Sale. For nuanced titling situations or transactional support, contact the West Virginia DMV directly.
