Currency

Currency is a vital part of the NASBLA Boat Operations and Training (BOAT) Program. It ensures that responders retain the skills and knowledge necessary to perform safely and effectively in maritime operations.

What is Currency?
Currency refers to the ongoing demonstration of proficiency in specific course disciplines after initial training. To maintain currency, documentation of currency requirements must be completed and submitted annually.

Courses Requiring Currency
Currency is reserved for the following NASBLA courses:
  • Boat Crew Member (BCM)
  • Boat Operator Search and Rescue (BOSAR)
  • Tactical Operator’s Course (TOC)
  • Pursuit & STOP Course (PAS)
How is Currency Maintained and Submitted?
  • Currency must be submitted to NASBLA at the published intervals.
  • Submissions must be signed by an agency’s training officer, supervisor, department head, or other command authority.
  • Once submitted, currency is updated in the National Database, allowing Incident Commanders to verify the qualifications and readiness of responders.
  • Students are responsible for ensuring their currency is maintained and submitted on time.
Operational Task Completion
Currency tasks may be completed during normal operations. These must be properly documented in the agency’s underway log to count toward currency requirements.

Why Currency Matters
Maintaining currency is essential for:
  • Operational readiness
  • Responder safety
  • Interoperability across agencies
  • Confidence in qualifications during incident response
Currency ensures that responders are not only trained, but remain capable and current, in the skills necessary to support maritime operations and emergency response.
