Vessels Requiring Titling
Any watercraft powered by a motor, including electric motors, operating on public waters, and any sail-powered vessel over 18 feet in length operating on public waters must be registered and titled. Requirements: Application for Watercraft Certificate of Title and Certificate of Number (BRT-001). Proof of Ownership (Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, out-of-state title, or signed-over Virginia title). Receipt of sales tax paid or transaction documentation.
Exempt Vessels
Vessels documented with the U.S. Coast Guard, non-motorized vessels (canoes, kayaks, rowboats), and sail-powered vessels 18 feet or less in length without auxiliary motor propulsion are exempt.
