Vessels Requiring Titling
All watercraft 20 feet and over in length and all watercraft with a permanently affixed engine, regardless of length, must be titled. Watercraft not required to be titled may be titled upon the request of the owner. Requirements: 1) Properly signed ownership document and identification. For a new watercraft purchased in Michigan that is required to be titled, a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO), or title, properly assigned to the new owner, is required. For a new watercraft purchased in another state or Canadian province, an MCO or bill of sale from the dealer may be accepted. For a new watercraft that isn't required to be titled, the owner may request a title (usually to record a lienholder). The MCO, if available, is submitted. A bill of sale from a dealer may also be accepted. Used watercraft require a Michigan title or out-of-state title/ownership document assigned to the new owner. A lien shown on the title must be terminated. Other cases: In some cases, when an applicant cannot provide an assigned ownership document from the owner on system for a Michigan watercraft valued at $2,500 or less (either titled or non-titled), the watercraft law provides a self-certification process. A court order identifying the watercraft and awarding ownership or surety bond.
Exempt Vessels
Watercraft not required to be titled may be titled upon the request of the owner. (Vessels under 20 feet without a permanently affixed engine are generally exempt from mandatory titling unless requested).
