Vessels Requiring Titling
All motorized watercraft and all sailboats operating in Indiana must be titled. Ownership Transfers & Grandfather Clause: A person who owned a watercraft prior to the historical exemption cutoffs noted below is permitted to continue to register that vessel without obtaining a title. However, immediately upon change of ownership, a standard legal title becomes mandatory.
Exempt Vessels
• Any watercraft officially exempt from registration. • Watercraft documented with the U.S. Coast Guard. Historical Titling Exemptions (Phased Out): • Prior to July 1, 2016, the following were exempt: 1. Watercraft purchased prior to January 1, 1986. 2. Homemade watercraft. 3. Watercraft valued under $3,000 when new. • Prior to January 1, 2022, the following were exempt: 1. Non-residents registering their watercraft in Indiana. 2. Non-motorized sailboats. 3. Watercraft being voluntarily registered.
