NASBLA Mourns the Passing of Christopher Stec, Champion of Boating Safety

Christopher Stec (Feb. 19, 1976 – April 4, 2026), of Virginia, passed away at the age of 50. He lived a life defined by service, leadership and an unwavering commitment to boating and water safety. From his roots in south Louisiana to his work in North Carolina and Virginia, Chris built a legacy centered on education, safety and community.

He served as director of auxiliary programs at Fredericksburg Academy and was a longtime leader within the American Canoe Association, where he inspired countless individuals through his passion for paddlesports and outdoor learning. His influence extended nationally as past chair of the National Safe Boating Council and through his leadership across multiple organizations advancing recreational boating safety initiatives.

Chris also played a key role in national policy and outreach efforts, serving on the U.S. Coast Guard’s National Boating Safety Advisory Council and contributing to the U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan. His work reflected a lifelong dedication to protecting others and promoting responsible recreation on the water.

Christopher Stec, ChinaAn accomplished instructor and educator, Chris held advanced certifications in whitewater canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. Over nearly three decades, he mentored instructors and students across the country and internationally, sharing his expertise through presentations, publications and educational resources that continue to shape the field.

His contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the Boating Safety Hall of Fame and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Meritorious Public Service Award.

Chris will be remembered for his generosity, enthusiasm and steadfast dedication to others. A proud husband, father and Eagle Scout, his legacy lives on in the many lives he impacted throughout the boating safety and paddlesports communities.
